The Calling - Laura Winters VFX

The Problem
Was to transform a parking lot into an infinite horizon where Laura would perform. This isolated environment would serve both the emotion and style of the film. Tons of rotoscoping, 3d tracking, map projection, and painting was needed to achieve this goal.

No Green Screens
Were used in the film. We needed the camera to be able to move freely and the scale of the green screens required would have been enormous. Other benefits to not using green screens were no spill, no motion blur issues, plenty of tracking marks available, and more realism.

Meticulous Rotoscoping
Was done to separate the Laura from the area where the horizon needed to be replaced. Most of the time this was around 30% of the frame. Leaving the other 70% untouched. Had green screens been used, we wouldn’t have been able to get those happy accidents such as birds flying during specific moments of the film.
